Gabions and Wire
Gabions are rectangular baskets stoutly made of hexagonal steel wire mesh strengthened by selvedge of heavier wire and by mesh diaphragms. They are often used for earth retention and erosion control. Unlike rigid structures, they are flexible and well suited to projects over unstable foundations. They possess tremendous strength and require little maintenance. We deliver our gabions flat-packed, which can be assembled and then filled with stones at the project site.
If your project covers an area where less depth and more surface area protection is required, a special type of gabion is used, namely Mattresses. They are wider, with less depth and often used as flexible foundation slabs under gabions. Desired properties for various components for fabrication of wire mesh gabions are as follows:
Wire
All tests on the wire mesh, lacing wire should be performed before manufacturing the mesh.
The material MUST come from an ISO9001 certified factory.
Temsile strength of wire (per BS 1052:1980 and EN10223-3 | 350 – 500mm |
Elongation (per EN10223-3) | <10% |
Sample length | > 25cm |
Zinc Coating | |
---|---|
Adhesion of the zinc coating to the wire | As per EN 10244 (when the wire is warped sit turns around a mandrel having four times the diameter of the wire, it does not flake or crack when rubbing it with the bare fingers) |
Physical characteristic of mesh wire | NO rusty spots on the part of the surface excluding the cut ends |

Frequently Asked Questions
Gabions are wire mesh cages filled with materials like stones, rocks, or gravel, commonly used for erosion control, retaining walls, and landscaping projects. They’re also popular in architectural applications for adding a natural aesthetic to structures.
Gabion structures are highly durable and designed to last for decades. The lifespan depends on factors like the type of wire used, coating, and environmental conditions, but our galvanized and PVC-coated wires are resistant to corrosion and degradation.
